Yugoslav Musical Calendar

Given that most of former Yugoslavia is still agricultural or tied to the weather through tourism it is no wonder that seasons still play a large part in its music.

I decided to make a little playlist with the best songs which can be tied to specific seasons, months and hoildays so that you can see how the Yugomind conceptualises time. Whether it is Ana Nikolić’s incerdibly written Januar which captures the month’s disappointments or Zabranjeno Pušenje’s Dan republike with a great familial vignette of how 29th November was celebrated during Socialisim, these songs are timeless. It is also fun to notice that Đorđe Balašević was probably the best poet of the changing seasons and holidays which is probably unsurprising given that he hails from the largely agricultural Northern Serbia.

Happy New Year!
